Dr. Amit Mitra (Finance Minister of West Bengal)
I was watching Times Now last night. There were many debates held on the central point of FDI in retail. One such debate was with Dr. Amit Mitra, who is the Finance Minister of West Bengal. He was asked to explain the logic of why Trinamool Congress is against FDI in retail and against Diesel Price Hike.
Being an economist, he replied with various technical terms which can be understood only by a student of Economics. But one term used by him, caught my attention. It is not taught in the regular studies of "Forms of Market".
He said that the Foreign retail giants will have "Monopsony Power".
In simple terms Monopsony means a Market where there is Single Buyer facing Multiple Sellers.
If this has triggered your curiosity, then check the following links for additional discussion.
Hope you find this interesting.
About the question of FDI in retail, will actually unleash the monopsony power of retail giants or not, will be answered only by the times to come and the measures taken by the Government to control the same.

Miller Orr Model of Cash Management
While discussing the Miller Orr model of cash management in my CA IPCC lecture, a question arose as to how to calculate cube root?
Suddenly it occurred to me that without scientific calculator, it is difficult to achieve; as, CA IPCC students are allowed to use only the standard calculator in examination. I. then decided to search a technique for quick calculation of cube root with a standard calculator or even without any calculator.
As expected, there were numerous resources on this subject, but many were giving complicated techniques of the same. I found three links which explained the concept nicely and in a simple manner for every CA IPCC student; whether with or without mathematics background.
And before I proceed to wish you all the best for your studies of cube root calculation, let me give you a gentle reminder, that it all started from Miller Orr cash management model, so come back to the calculation of "Z" once you find the cube root. :D
All the Best for your CA IPCC studies.

Falling Indian Rupee & Finance Minister
Indian Rupee has suffered depreciation in money market. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has blamed Euro zone crisis for the same. This prompted me to check the material available on the web explaining the meaning of,
I found very interesting videos and articles on the same. For your benefit I am sharing some of the videos below.
The following video describes the meaning of appreciation or depreciation in the value of any currency and why a country would like to manipulate the value of it's currency.
Once you are through with it, check the following animation explaining the expected steps for saving the world from Euro zone crisis.
If you have still maintained your stamina, then check this beautiful presentation from The Economist, explaining what may happen if Greece which is considered to be the biggest contributor to Euro zone crisis, decides to quit Euro zone?
This entire discussion is important for the students of XII and TYBCom economics, especially for your Project work.

TYBcom 2011-12 was a roller coaster for students. First it was introduction of 60:40 rule, then it was Question Paper leak of MHRM, then it was the strike by professors. Everybody was anticipating a delayed result, but Mumbai University has given a sweet shock to all TYBCom students by declaring the results very quickly. Last year it was 19th July, this year it is 5th June itself. Now the students can plan for their future career options with firm stand.
The Times of India in this report has given various reasons for the rise in number of students passing with first class. With such a rise, we are of the opinion that students will have to strive more in their future career as the prospective employers and the other educational institutions may raise the bar for entry in to their system. But we are sure that More Students will excel in every institution just like their results in University.
Subject Highest in TYBcom
TYBCom 2011-12 Subject Highest
The subject wise highest for the subjects taught in the Class show that despite Financial Accounting being the toughest subject, More students have shown their excellence by securing 95 out of 100 in FA. The subject of taxation is also at Par with Financial Accountancy.
This is followed by Management Accountancy at 91; Costing and Auditing at 87; MHRM at 85; and the subject of Economics (which is not so favourite among students) is also conquered with 83 marks by Moreites.
Overall Passing percentage of TYBCom
Of the 196 Moreites who appeared for TYBCom, till date 16% have not reported their performance. Of the balance, 12% scored distinction and 48% scored First Class, making a total of 60% student passing with or above First Class.
Of the 9% students who could not pass, majority have suffered the debacle at the hands of Financial Accounting. This is an alarm bell for current year students that despite 60:40 and despite 15 marks for objectives, Financial Accountancy is still a difficult terrain.
Only continuous practice and meticulous following of Class methods can help you in conquering this beautiful but difficult subject.
The Road Ahead
Although proposed, ICAI has not yet issued notification for allowing exemption from CPT to fresh graduates. Hence, those of you who intend to do CA, the only remaining option is to appear for CPT in December 2012. The last date of registration for the same is September30,2012.
Another option is to pursue Company Secretary or Cost Accountancy course, where the clearance of entrance examination is exempted for graduate students.
Those of you who wish to pursue M Com, our advice would be to do either full time or part time job in administration department of any organisation to get the feel of work culture.
At More we are already conducting Classes for Company Secretary. This year we will be re-starting coaching for M Com and CA IPCC also. The classes for both will start from July 2012. Join us to excel yourself. Keep watching this space for detailed announcement.

The suspense is over. Results of HSC 2011-12 are already declared. The results of Mumbai region are dubbed as "worst in decade", by Times of India. The passing percentage has gone down and the overall picture is gloomy for all streams for the entire Mumbai Region.
If the results of Mumbai Region are to be taken as basis, then the results of XII at More Classes for 2011-12 must be declared as an oasis in the Desert. Take a look at the graph below, to know the outstanding achievements of Moreites.
The year of Distinctions and First Class
We feel sorry for 2% students who could not make is to next year due to poor performance in Optional Subjects such as German or some surprise losses, where we have insisted the students to opt for rechecking.
Everybody at More, scores in Book Keeping !
22% students scored more than 90% in Bk and 30% scored more than 80% in BK; making it 52% students scoring more than 80 marks in BK, which by any any yardstick is no mean feat.
The year of FIRSTS
2011-12 was the first year at More's; where we started with the concept of Pre-Vacation Batches (Studies of XII will start in January of XI). It was the brain Child of Prof. Nikhil Nair, who took it upon himself to bring an outstanding performance from his students. He was supported by equal enthusiasm from Prof. Sanjay Thatte and Prof. Sujith Raman. Besides introduction of Pre-Vacation Batch, There were many firsts, such as
It's all a team work !
We know that all that is great is achieved with the team work. It was the great team of enthusiastic students, passionate professors, dedicated staff and last but not the least the patient and understanding parents, which brought the excellent results for XII. We congratulate you all for your achievement.
To celebrate this success a small party is arranged at Class Premises on June 6, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. The party shall be followed by felicitation of Super achievers.
Picture abhi baki hai mere dost !
XII is not the end of the road. "Picture abhi baki hai mere dost!" is an apt line to describe the life after XII. There are many options available for the students. Such as,
Students are advised to choose the course carefully after considering their personal strengths and not just blindly follow the advice of their friends or relatives. In case of any confusion please feel free to contact your professors or Administration Staff at More.

Modern Times require Modern Education Techniques !
Continuing with it's practice of changing with times and maintaining high standards of education, The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) has recently introduced New Syllabus for the entrance examination to Company Secretary career; popularly known as Foundation Programme (CSFP). ICSI has also changed the pattern/mode of conducting exams.
Continue reading below for details of the new pattern and our take on the same
The Change means these things for you,
Take a look at Subject details & Marks for them below,
ICSI has taken a giant leap by introducing objectives based curriculum. This is in sync with the trend of entrance level examinations of other professional courses and management studies. The only thing peculiar is that the test will be conducted in 2 days. But, obliviously, it gives more time to prepare also.
Preparing for theoretical subjects will no longer be nightmare. The emphasis will be on understanding the concepts and not mugging up.
In CA CPT the biggest pressure point is while attempting the doubtful questions, as there is fear of negative marking.
But in new & revised CSFC there is no negative marking for wrong answers.
The only concern is the quantum of syllabus prescribed. In an attempt to construct a great foundation, the institute has increased the variety and volume of the syllabus. But, many concepts are a repetition of Pre-graduation (XI & XII) level studies, giving a sigh of relief.
In a nutshell, the new syllabus and examination scheme of ICSI for CS Foundation Programme is good news for Company Secretaries course aspirants and we are happy to guide you in your studies.
With the dedicated team of More Classes, exhaustive study materials, well equipped classes and 5 years experience of teaching CA-CPT examination, we are sure that your studies for CSFP with us will be a successful joyride.
Wishing you all the best,
--Prof. Nikhil Nair & Prof. Anand More
